Overall, the hotel is pretty great and the owners are lovely. It's very quiet, the rooms are nice and the beds firm. The owners cook their own meals at the restaurant, it takes some time but it's very tasty. For the money you pay (which is half the price of most villas in the vicinity) it's a steal. Right on the beach, close to the main road and a bunch of places to eat. The pool is large, bigger than most tiny hotel pools, and is cleaned regularly. Rooms are also cleaned a few times a week. There are howler monkeys living in the trees right next to the hotel.

Great location just steps from a huge beach where you can decide if you want to stay in a beach bar among people or walk a bit and be pretty much alone. Very friendly owner who is happy to help and advise with any question you might have and is also great cook if you want to order e.g. a special dinner :)

Hotel Hibiscus is a great place to stay! Even if the rooms are very simple, the keyfactors match totally. Very comfortable and super clean bed, great internet which offers you wifi at the beach, super well working Airconditioner and Van, and a big fridge. Christian, the owner, is super friendly and helpful and you have just 50steps to the beach!

Soul Shine is the best accommodation choice in the Playa Avellanas area. The cabinas are spacious and clean with comfortable beds, good WiFi, air conditioning and a mini-fridge. The pool is a gorgeous place to relax and the grounds are laden with lush tropical flowers and vegetation. The location is amazing - Avellanas beach is a short walk away, and so are many great restaurants, including Barumis (burgers), Lola’s, La Parruja, and La Esquina, a community space with tacos, sushi, cocktails and other tasty food (visit the public market there on Friday nights for local vendors and live music). You can also walk next door and get some gelato! Owners Yael and Roee are the ultimate hosts and will ensure your stay is as perfect as possible. You really are part of the family when you’re here. And a Soul Shine review wouldn’t be complete without mentioning their delicious brunch! This place serves up some of the best food you’ll find in the area – even in all of Costa Rica. Authentic menu items such as shakshuka, Gypsy King, falafels and avocado toast are all served hot and fresh with crispy salad and yummy tapas on the side. The fresh bread is served warm and melts in your mouth! Soul Shine has everything you need for a perfect stay in the Playa Avellanas/Playa Negra area – comfortable rooms, attentive hosts, amazing food and close to the beach and restaurants. We were fascinated by the whole hotel complex. The rooms, reception and kitchen are designed with style and creativity. The pool is a perfect place to chill at any time of the day and kind of magic. There is a fireplace for the guests in front of the hotel which makes evenings even more cozy. The personal is very friendly. The neighborhood is a quiet one. There is a beach bar and several places to eat not far away from the hotel (20 - 30 min walk or 5 min to drive). The beach (playa negra) is not overrun and we like it due to its relaxed atmosphere.

We loved our stay at Mikado Lodge! It is an incredible property in the middle of the jungle. The room and deck were lovely as you feel like you are in the tree canopy with the sounds of howler monkeys, cicadas, and views of deer and so many species of birds. Bring your binoculars! We enjoyed the pool time, the little trail on site, and the troup of monkeys that came swinging through the trees through in the morning. Aside from the beauty of the nature, everything is just so polished and well-taken care of. It is clear that a lot of thought and time has gone into the design and care of this boutique hotel. The owner, Lolo, was a gracious and accommodating host. She whipped up some delicious meals and was so sweet with our one year old. Playa Avellana is close by so you can go from jungle to beach in about 15 minutes! We would definitely stay there again.

Very nice and accessible beach.

Very nice and accessible beach. Any kind of vehicle can get there easily. You don't need 4WD transportation. Beach is still very natural and unspoiled and I hope it remains that way for long time. No large hotels or multi-story apartments ... just natural beach landscape. Residents have implemented a sea turtle protection program as some of these lovely creatures get there to lay their eggs during specific times of the year.

We loved the quiet area, and the beach; walked everywhere,...

We loved the quiet area, and the beach; walked everywhere, didn't need a car. Food was great at many local restaurants, including Guacamaya, Tata's (breakfast), Tatanka's, Mundo Milo and the Tides. Kayaked in the mangroves and visited the local turtle sanctuary.
