Could have stayed a couple to 3 days if doing the Pennine Way and able to organise transport to and from beginning/end of next sections as often very nice not to have to unpack and pack every night of the trails!

Alston is a quiet town that has kept its character.

Alston is a quiet town that has kept its character. Doing the heritage walk is well worth it to appreciate the tucked away corners. It also has pretty much all you need -cafes, bakery, a superb hardware shop, a whole food shop etc. Not many places to eat in the evening. The surrounding countryside is beautiful.

Alston is a great town and one of my favourites in the country, the area relies on tourism but contains huge amounts of history and culture to explore. The town is limited on shops but has some great locals stores to support, many of which I try to use when I visit. I hope to see some more cafes and coffee shops in the area I love wandering into the remaining walking cloth store and around the train museum. Parking can be tricky and off road parking is limited but there is road parking around.

This is an interesting alive village.

This is an interesting alive village. There is a railway trip that goes from Alston to Scallywag from the station in town and from here you can explore Hadrian's Wall and Bowes Castle. As it is high in the Pennines, some amazing views of the local area.

Lovely oldy worldy place to stay.

Lovely oldy worldy place to stay. Lovely walks from the doorstep. Good selection of cafe's and pubs for dining out. Local co-op and spar shops for buying food and a handful of lovely independent shops. Beautiful scenic location, We stayed for 4 nights and didn't use the car once as everything we needed was on the doorstep. Would definitely stay again in Alston

Alston is a beautiful and unspoilt authentic tyneside treasure, nestled in the south tyneside pennines. It is perfectly located to some of the most stunning scenary in the UK. Whilst it is central to the C2C route, it is just slightly off the main tourist areas to offer wilderness and solitude balanced with easy reach to primary historical AOB. Hadrians Wall, stunning Penrith, Ullswater, narrow gauge Tyneside railway, are just a few of the amazing things to do and places to visit that are on offer for a packed holiday or break. Cracking traditional pubs, super friendly and warm locals, and outstanding wildlife.

I'd booked The Cottage for my brother and his family. Five adults and two large dogs. They all had a wonderful time. The dogs, with boundless energy, thoroughly enjoyed the garden. So much so, my family had difficulty getting them out of there. Perfect for a weekend away. My brother had a hip replacement just a week ago and said he had perfect sleep. The Cottage is perfectly situated to Alston for food shopping, cafes etc.

Friendly, relaxed vibe. Lovely view from the room. Nice food in the pub itself in the evening with a fire. It is an Ideal location for Alston. Breakfast was lovely - plenty of choice. A friendly lady member of staff enthusiastically helped us find the car park. Comfy bed. This place suits the style of the town

Extremely friendly and helpful landlady. The hotel has seen better days but the room was clean and comfortable. Bicycle storage in a store room. WiFi worked. Good breakfast. Excellent value for money if you're not looking for something fancy. 5 minutes walk to pubs and restaurants for evening meals.

Charming hotel in an elegant Georgian building. Glorious surroundings (but may be chilly in winter at an altitude of over 1000ft). Asolutely peaceful. Lovely room with a beautiful view and a comfortable bed. Excellent breakfast. Kind and helpful staff. Very dog friendly too.
