There are so many eloquent descriptions of Lecce, its buildings, its food culture and friendly, welcoming, residents. I found them all to be accurate for the old town, but also for the more residential areas around the university where I stayed for over a week. In truth, the historical highlights, and great food could adequately be covered in 3/4 days, but the deeper wanderings around the town, enjoying the fantastic antiquity collections of Museo Sigismondo Castromediano could not be adequately enjoyed in that time. So, if you do have time, kick back a little, explore beyond the obvious and enjoy the relaxed charm on offer. Stroll through the baroque city and be impressed. Many nice cafés and restaurant. All serve good Italian local food. Try "VICO del cuciniere". A beautiful town with a great atmosphere especially during the summer festival which we attended. The whole region of Puglia is fantastic, both for sightseeing and culinary. Be sure to see the smaller towns nearby like Ostranto and swim on the beautiful beach of Marina di Pescoluse (but not in the middle of the season). Historic Lecce is a wonderful and interesting city.
Historic Lecce is a wonderful and interesting city. It has much to offer whether it by culture of culinary. It does get busy and has lots of those small shops you typically find where tourists wander, but these too I enjoy. Its location almost guarantees reasonable weather. The room was nice, spacious and clean. Owners Salvio and Monica were very hospitable, Salvio recommended us a few good restaurants and also booked the table for us. On top of everything they prepare amazing breakfasts with local products that are typical for Puglia region. There is savory and sweet option, both amazing.
