Amazing old town.

Amazing old town. You can walk for hours and not see the same place. We walked across the gorge, over a rope bright and up to the caves. Great restaurants and very inexpensive. Surrounding the old town is modern shopping. Need 2-3 full days.

Amazing town - totally unique and very interesting.

Amazing town - totally unique and very interesting. Definitely worth a visit as part of a trip to Puglia. Worth at least one nights stay to see the town in the evening and early morning when it’s quieter. Recommend the walk down into the gorge and up to the other side for fabulous views especially at sunset.

MATERA WAS VERY INTERESTING - A LOVELY PLACE TO VISIT. WE STAYED AT THE WONDERFUL CASA DI ELE. THE HOSTS WERE DELIGHTFUL, OUR CAVE ROOM WAS IMMACULATE AND FUN AND BREAKFAST WAS A REAL TREAT. LOCATION PERFECT. WE CANNOT RECOMMEND HIGHLY ENOUGH. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR KIND HOSPITALITY. ANTOINETTE DOOWNEY

Matera is a breathtaking city carved into ancient stone — a place where history, art, and raw beauty meet. Walking through its cave dwellings and sunlit alleys feels like stepping into another time. It’s a must-see for anyone who loves authenticity, stunning views, and unforgettable atmosphere.

Matara is not to be missed.

Matara is not to be missed. The history is fascinating and dates back to centuries BC. If you enjoy challenging hiking, that's available too! This would not be the best town to explore for someone with chronic pain or disabilities given the many stairs and levels of walking required.

Beautifully rennovated hotel room combining old stone and stylish design with quite a luxurious feel. Modern bath and sauna area. Comfortable bed. Coffee and tea available. They do not offer breakfast but give good suggestions. Front desk lady was passionatly involved and gave the most extensive information about a town we've ever received (differnt coloured markers were used ;-) Perfectly located just one side street away from the Matera sassi area. Would recommend a 2 night stay off season to get a good feel for the town

Right from initial contact with Antonello and Clara, through to check in, recommendations for aperativo and dinner, and a surprise room upgrade, they were delightful, so friendly and helpful. They went well above and beyond, giving me a lift to the bus station when I was leaving. The boutique hotel is beautiful - spotlessly clean with the most comfortable bed and a brilliant shower. Thank you both for making my stay in Matera so lovely.

We had a wonderful stay in a cave room which was stunning. We had a great welcome with a glass of wine and because it was my wife’s birthday they even put a bottle of wine in our bedroom - a lovely touch. This was the best place we have stayed in on our time in Italy. In a great location in the heart of the Sassi. We parked on the street about 10-15 minutes walk from the hotel. We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast as well.

Room was great (although not the cave room which we didn't realise when we booked). Hosts were great. Would have been good to have some more flexibility on check in times but we made it work. The Rooms are great, super nicely designed and clean. Breakfast was the best we've had in Italy! Very nice place. Location for Matera is also great.

Fantastic experience! The cave-like appartment is stunning, very well designed. The location is so good that you actually get the best views of Matera right at your doorsteps. The parking option with transfer service, which was recommended by the hotel, was very convenient too.
