It's a spa town with a lot of history and a very energetic red-light district. Lots of money being invested in new tall buildings in the centre of the business district that don't quite jive with the otherwise laid-back (if you'll pardon the expression) atmosphere of the town. The 7 hells was the reason we went to Beppu and they were interesting but I'm not 100% sure it was worth travelling specifically for. Better to have it as a day trip from Fukuoka. If you do go, don't go to the 'Crocodile' one, I'm no expert in Crocodile health, but those poor things really did not look in very good condition. When driving into Beppu, I figured it was just another town. It was towards the end of 3 weeks driving around Kyushu and we were weary! While people come here for the Seven Hells, we found Beppu to be quite charming. Although quiet, we thought it had a lovely vibe and some busy restaurants to choose from in the evening. The hells are touristy and there are a couple I probably wouldn’t recommend but it’s what Beppu is known for. We booked 1 night in a 3-bed room with private bathroom.
We booked 1 night in a 3-bed room with private bathroom. The staff were very nice and accommodating, waiting for us when we didn't realise they have a closing time to check in. The main room and in-room bathroom were very spacious. Comfy beds, bathroom shower seem a little weak but had all necessary things such as fridge and table. Kettle in room but if you want to cook, there is a shared kitchen with the rest of the guest house. The only slight negative is that getting to the guesthouse from the station at night was dark, quiet, twisty turny with practically no one around so if alone could be a scary few minutes walk.Guest review byKai

I highly recommend a stay here as it's an oasis of calm to relax. The rooms are all well equipped with everything you would need during your stay.
