FAQs about hotels in Essaouira

Morocco With a European Twist

Essaouira has developed from a hippie hangout to become a top Morocco beach resort with good surfing conditions. Its 18th-century medina is almost European in feel and narrow streets lead under low arches past fragrant spice stalls and local artisans selling everything from wood carvings to faience pottery.

Dotted around the souk are many traditional-style riads on Booking.com, hidden behind tiled façades and blue doors. Other Essaouira accommodation options include luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap apartments, and B&Bs near Essaouira Airport.

Also bright blue are the rowing boats bobbing gently in small harbours sheltered by the Scala of the Port, a wide walkway with ramparts through which several historic cannons poke out. At the end is the Citadel, a small fortress overlooking Mogador Island - the largest of the Iles Purpuraires, so-called for the purple shells found in their rocks that were once used to produce dyes for Roman senator togas.

Another fortress – Bordj El Berod – lies in pieces on the long, sandy beach south of the marina. In the opposite direction the coastline is more rocky and lined by the Scala of the Kasbah, the crenellated walls protecting the medina. Horseriding and camel safaris are available on the beach and you can also visit a Berber village inland.

I chose this place for fresh seafood, as advertised.

I chose this place for fresh seafood, as advertised. What I had was an awful, almost-poisonous, life-threatening experience, as my fresh, chosen purchase of tiger prawns had been replaced by rotten ones by the fishmonger. It could have happened while I was struggling to count their foreign money out of my pocket. I ended up being in an embarrassing situation with the apartment owner when I cooked the prawns and polluted the whole building with a foul smell of rotten seafood. I chucked them all out in the bin, and I lost my appetite for the rest of my stay in Morocco. I should have listened to what my friends were saying about this place.

Very relaxed beach town.

Very relaxed beach town. Nice medina and souk but not aggressive as you find in other Moroccan cities. Very high quality art and crafts. Beautiful views and beach, many spas available, very fresh seafood. Excellent restaurants.

The medina is lovely.

The medina is lovely. You can walk around freely with no one hassling you to come into their shop. The locals are lovely and so helpful. The variety of places to eat, have a coffee or just sit and watch are plentiful and its great to wander down all the narrow passageways and discover what is around the next corner. Its safe, easy to get around and Id return in a heartbeat. There is a main shopping street outside the medina where you can find the shops that sell alcohol and more fruit and vegetables. The port has an active fish market but there is fresh fish and a small fish market inside the medina too. The beach is lovely with sunbeds to rent and vendors walking up and down selling tea, biscuits etc. You get asked but you do not get harrassed. Its great.

A pleasant though very windy place. A charming medina.

A pleasant though very windy place. A charming medina. Good restaurants and plenty of fresh fish. Definitely worth having a hire car. Some lovely upmarket hotels/spas in the surrounding countryside.

A big (and much cooler) contrast to Marrakech, Essaouira is a very traditional Berber town, but much smaller, but with lots of good eating options, (no alcohol in most!) The souk is lovely with lots of choice for everything, and the beach area very nice, but being on the Atlantic, prone to wind. We spent our 2nd evening on the sea front watching the sun go down and enjoying fresh sardines - a nice 2 day stop over.

Mix of old town, port and beach.

Mix of old town, port and beach. In danger of becoming a little overrun with tourists during day. All felt very safe. Loads of usual souk shops - especially notable are the wood ones (Thuya). Large gently sloping beach, good for watersports. Don't miss the port - very active during day - buy some fish and get it cooked nearby very cheaply, but can get very busy (and chaotic!). Wide range of restaurants, recommend the Ocean Vagabond at far end of beach. Taros bar is liveliest place, but drinks pricey. Note of caution : We did get get some food poisoning, difficult to be precise, but seemed to stem from one meal at a 'good' restaurant ( I won't name and shame as cannot be totally sure !?) , probably from a salad or fruit dessert ?

Beautiful, beautiful hotel. A gift for the eyes. Decorated with taste, clean. Nice room, nice terrace for breakfast (and good breakfast). Handy to have a restaurant on the ground floor. Location is the best, super close to both Medina and beach. Although it may not be the best riad for children (it's very spacious, but with lots of things that can break), the hotel did everything to accommodate our 2 year old.

Lovely hotel within very short walk of the medina port and the beach. Staff very happy and helpful. Lovely small pool in the garden with ample number of sunbeds if you don’t fancy the beach. No air con in the rooms but with the steady breeze from the sea front not necessary. Our room had sea view which was lovely.
