Fès is a kaleidoscope of colours, smells and sensations, and its intricate urban design is an allegory of its own identity. Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.

The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.

The city can be reached through Fès Saïss Airport, or from the airports in Casablanca and Rabat via railway or bus connection. Whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Fez New Town or a historic ‘riad’ in the medina, don’t miss Booking.com’s wide offering!

Early September was the wrong time to go there (my mistake)...

Early September was the wrong time to go there (my mistake) - far too hot to be enjoyable. Getting around in the Medina was very difficult and sometimes frustrating. There one can easily fall into the trap of being accosted by self-styled guides who will take you to various shops and ask you for money at the end. Perhaps for an older traveller it would have been better to lodge outside the Medina and visit it from there with an official tour. On the positive side, some of the sites were very beautiful and the people mostly very friendly and helpful.

The medina is a Unesco protected cultural heritage.

The medina is a Unesco protected cultural heritage. Too bad the only thing you can see, apart from some (mostly closed) gates, is old narrow streets and shops. Locals prey on tourists in order to squeeze them dry :) In Rabat or Salé you can get a more authentic sense of a medina without the commercial pressure.

There were a lot of artisans which was nice.

There were a lot of artisans which was nice. We were often set upon by people trying to take us somewhere and wanting money, even when we said no they wouldn’t leave us alone. After a time we didn’t stop anywhere which really was a shame. The amount of garbage was also quite distressing and took away from some of the sights. We took a tour to the middle Atlas Mountains which was really lovely. The food was good everywhere we ate in the Medina.

The issue was that I booked accommodation in the old medina which is a labyrinth. This leaves tourists being constantly harassed by locals trying to scam money from them or deliberately deceiving them about closed streets, etc. Skip Fez and go to Marrakech and Essouira. So much better without all the hassles:)

Loved the beautiful artisanal crafts and decor everywhere.

Loved the beautiful artisanal crafts and decor everywhere. Love this place for its connection to history. What I didn’t like was how the people living in the medina would lie about roads being closed, keep trying to befriend you in a fake way do they can lead you anywhere then fight about tips. I also really disliked the obscene tourist pricing in the markets. Artisans and shop kerpers mark up items 4, 5 or more times what the price of the item should be. A lot of deception and trickery when selling.

Same as marrakesh but not as exhausting. Same tip culture!

Same as marrakesh but not as exhausting. Same tip culture! Really off putting for those who do not come from this tipping culture. Would skip Fes if I was doing the trip again… I would have stayed in Ifrane instead.

Beautiful place, like from a fairy tale, with a roof top terrace overlooking the heart of medina. Friendly, professional people ready to provide advice and assistance. Mr. Rafael, the owner, makes sure that you are treated with a nice attention and he gives insightful advice on travelling in Morocco. Heavenly cuisine and rich breakfast prepared by Mrs. Fatima. Big thanks to Abdul who has assisted throughout the whole stay, arranged trips or hammam. I would like to stay again when next time in Fes.

I just stayed here and it was probably the best part of my visit to Morocco. The owners, and staff, are friendly, polite and this has to be the most gorgeous Riad in Fes. It is so comfortable, and safe, and in a fantastic location for the Medina, and meeting tours. The breakfast and dinner are incredible. Noor ,Hassan were so helpful in every way. great for a solo female traveler although I would recommend for others as well. Highly recommend. I’d give 10 stars if I could.

The staff were really helpful with everything we needed in out first stay at Fès. They were open, patient and had great solutions every time. Food was delicious and yes you NEED a guide when you are in Fès if it is your first time. The Medina is huge and complicated to navigate compared to other places in Morocco, but it is such a great experience. Once in the hotel there is no noise, it's like a little oasis with its old architecture. Really cool.

Here was amazing. We came from Marrakesh to Fes. In Fes this hotel is a very good location. 3 min far from Blue gate. And receptions are very helpful. They will from the first day contact you and explain how to found the hotel. They will recommend good places to see and a lot of information about Morocco. They will organise tours to every where in Morocco and prices better than online agencies. Very clean and breakfast was very delicious.
