Twizel was an area for farming & sheep grazing until the NZ...

Twizel was an area for farming & sheep grazing until the NZ Govt decided to connect all the Alpine Lochs via a series Canals & Power Plants to create a Massive Hydro Power Scheme in the late 60's. It took nearly 20 years, but at the completion of the Power Project the Village of Twizel was established & the Power scheme workers & residents wanted the town to remain. Luckily they won the day & Twizel became part of The MacKenzie County Council set up & is now a Tourist Mecca for Alpine Enthusiasts. A great place to base yourself whilst visiting Mount Cook/Aoraki & the surrounding Ben Ohau Valley Region. Twizel still has that quaintness of a small Alpine Village, a quality that seems to have been lost in other nearby Tourist Meccas.

Didn’t do much in Twizel itself as it was for us just a...

Didn’t do much in Twizel itself as it was for us just a stopover on a long roadie, and we had been in the area before. But there is heaps to do and see within a short drive. We had our own food with us so didn’t eat out. The camp kitchen was great.

My husband and I have been coming to Twizel for several...

My husband and I have been coming to Twizel for several years now. My husband comes for the fishing and I for the photography. We have stayed in all seasons. This time it was July middle of winter. Didn't catch any fish but I got some great photos. Had a lovely meal out at Poppies. Would recommend them. We were disappointed with our accommodation, but it didn't ruin our stay in Twizel.

Cute, small town with the most amazing scenery. The town itself is very small, but offers so much with scenic walks, activities & the locals are super friendly. We had dinner at the Razza Bar - a small, old school bar with the best atmosphere & great food. The owner was really friendly and told us all about the lord of the rings filming and where we could find the area where the fight scene was filmed which was very cool. Beautiful place & we can’t wait to come back

The view is fantastic. We need to stay longer next time. Twizel is a good centre point for 2 lakes Lake Pukaki and Lake Takapo. Compare with stay in Lake Takapo, Stay in Twizel is more valuable. If you are hiring car yourself to teavel.

The lake is brilliant and perfect for our power boat racing. The restaurants were fantastic and the food was great. The 'hardware store' is more than that! You should definitely check it out. They have everything!

The holiday cottage in Twizel was fantastic - the photographs don't do the place justice! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. There were many personal touches which were greatly appreciated! The host was so attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable and the BBQ was a bonus. The stars outside the cottage were amazing; you could see the Milky Way clearly. We would love to stay here again!

We really liked Twizel but if you or your travelling companion is high-maintenance, you might not be as happy as we were at the High Country Lodge. It's a budget option and actually quite intriguing. So, we enjoyed it enormously, and give it a high review, but it's not luxury... Spectacular water pressure in the shower was a real treat.

The property is super clean, newly renovated. The service is friendly. It’s also closed to supermarket, around 5 minutes work. I normally stay in hotel but this place is as nice as any 4-5 stars hotels. They also offer free parking and have washing machine in the unit which is very convenient.

We stayed in Cabin 1. A basic, but comfortable cabin attached to reception. Good for kids. Our 9 year old soon found a playmate. very friendly staff and fellow visitors. A good old fashioned Kiwi holiday destination. Very handy location for all Twizel has to offer.
