FAQs about hotels in Coimbra

A Seat of Learning and Royalty

Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.

The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.

The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.

The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.

Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.

I went to Coimbra for a conference.

I went to Coimbra for a conference. I stayed in old town so I could walk and get a taste of both downtown life and being at the conference submerged in my field of work. Coimbra was enjoyable. Safe, quiet but everything a town has to offer. A selection of restaurants, reliable and accessible transport and some interesting walking tours that give you some history of the town and its culture and important significance. As well as lots of hills to walk up and down.

This modern city on an old historical site

This modern city on an old historical site has much to offer for it's size of 140k pop. A prestigious University, a clean and beautiful river, upscale retail shopping, restaurants, entertainment, and UNESCO World Heritage sites to visit. Queen Isabel/Saint Elizabeth might like what they've done with the place. All the quality pace of Porto and Lisbon w/o the Urban pressure.

The city is based on simple tourism and education due to the presence of the University of Coimbra. The landlords there refuse to rent to anyone but students. They refuse to grant leases to tenants, even though this is against the law.

Coimbra as a former capital, it’s full of historic buildings and fascinating attractions. The University of Coimbra is a highlight, especially its breathtaking library. The Cathedral is also incredibly beautiful and a must-see. The city’s rich history and charm make it a wonderful destination to explore.

Coimbra is a very nice town.

Coimbra is a very nice town. And you can go by train to Aveiro, another pleasant city, about one hour from Coimbra. And with a taxi or uber you can reach Conimbriga, old roman ruins (the best in the Iberic Peninsula), very interesting place.

A beautiful hotel in the old part of Coimbra by the universities, and close walking distance to the city centre. The spaces are meticulously clean and beautifully decorated, inspired by the literary greats of Portugal. There is a rooftop bar with views of the river, city and the old Law university - great for drinking a glass of wine in the evening and watching the sun set. Breakfast was fresh, delicious and ample, and the staff kind and welcoming. Should I go to Coimbra again, I would consider returning here as well!

This hotel is an authentic experience! The concept is quite new for hotels in Portugal, so you can expect some surprises! The room is very comfy, and the bathroom is super cool. Breakfast has the most delicious croissants I have ever eaten.

The only good quality of this hotel is its location. It’s conveniently situated on the same avenue as the Oslo Hotel, which actually lives up to its 3-star rating, unlike this place.
