Our three-night stay at Matraville Homestay was a very welcome change-of-pace after jungle treks and volcano hikes in Bukit Lawang and Berestagi. Our unit was VERY large (it would have easily suited a family of four) and well-appointed with a TV, fridge, sink and kettle for use. It was also spread over two levels, with the downstairs serving as the entrance/living room area/kitchenette, and the bedroom and bathroom/separate shower area upstairs. BONUS(ES): the unit entrance featured a little patio with a table and chair where you could have an early-morning coffee or tea while facing the sunrise; the upstairs level also provided a small balcony area to take in the morning sun or evening dusk. While the room we chose was across the street from the water (a 90-second walk at most, down a couple of shallow flights of steps, and therefore didn’t provide a direct waterfront view), there are two rooms available in another portion of the property that face the water and are just steps from it. Our excellent Host, Dimmer, picked us up from the Tuk Tuk ferry landing (and can also drop you off when you depart) and will provide you with everything you might need to make your stay comfortable, including tips on places to eat or have coffee nearby and suggestions for what to do/see on Samosir Island. He will also provide scooters for daily/multi-day use for very reasonable rates.

The jungle 2 day jungle trek he arranged was amazing too. The accommodation in right in the middle of the town and close to everything. The rooms are good and the bed is super comfy. All in all, I had an amazing stay here.

Gotong Rotong bus station and convenience store are located about 10 to 15 mins away by foot. The quiet villa with nice ambience is tucked away from town. Padi fields just a few minutes walk from the villa. Tyson, Dedek and team are super friendly. Their dog Balu is a charm. They are able to organize trips to the jungle, Tangkahan, transport and etc. It's like a one-stop villa for everything. The room is of good size and bed is very comfortable. Restaurant in the villa serves good food. (One can always replenish drinking water in the restaurant.) There is no need to walk out for meals. In any case, not much choices available near the villa unless one goes to Bukit Lawang. Bukit Lawang town is 20 minutes walk from the villa walking pass local residences. If not, one can take a motorbike to the town. The jungle trek organized by Tyson comes with a friendly and knowledagble guide and assistant. Saw 2 orangutans during the trek and also a few monkeys. Trek is tough and it's goes uphill and downhill. One ought to be fairly fit. Highly recommend Sumatra Orangutan Discovery Villa.

Everything is great, the owners are the most friendly people you ever meet, the service is great, the garden is beautiful, the room is very clean, breakfast is included! What can I say…. Stay there!!! They did 100000 extra miles to make the stay fantastic: we did many great things, like going to the market (30 min from the guesthouse), we went into rice fields and my children loved the soap making! And Eco print! And I really advice you to go to the jungle with them and guide Pipet. Lovely people, really into eco tourism, very responsible…. The jungle tour is fantastic! We love to come here!!!!! A big thanks for you all!!!!!!

Best part about this place is the hospitality and the atmosphere, the hosts are wonderfully warm and hospitable. The atmosphere is so peaceful and beautiful. Lots of greens and plants around, lovely village like location. You will have a peace of mind here.

Το Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys έχει κήπο, κοινόχρηστο χώρο lounge, βεράντα και μπαρ, στον προορισμό Bukit Lawang. We had a fantastic time at Cheeky Monkeys. The staff were incredibly kind, and it was wonderful to hang out with them in the common area. They were also very helpful with everything we needed. Our jungle trekking experience with them was absolutely awesome! Huge thanks to all the guides at Cheeky Monkeys. We highly recommend staying here; the rooms are comfortable, the common areas are inviting, and the garden is simply astonishing.

Το Kupu Kupu Garden Guest House & Cafe, το οποίο βρίσκεται μπροστά στη θάλασσα σε Bukit Lawang, έχει κήπο και βεράντα. Τα δωμάτια περιλαμβάνουν αυλή με θέα στο ποτάμι. Occasionally on my many travels over the years I have come across a place where I could quite easily stay put and while away the days, somewhere quiet literally at peace with itself and the world and I'm happy to say Kupu Kupu is one of those places. But is not just the place its the people that run it that make it so, so, special. Arif, Risky, my guide Putra, and Su you all touched my heart. Arif for your humanity and warmth, Risky for your infectious laugh positivity and the wonderful garden you tend that helps make Kupu Kupu so special, Putra my wonderful guide who took such good care of me on our jungle trek after I sprained my ankle. Such a special person and always ready with a smile and his( Ooops) not so wonderful signing (sorry Putra :) Huge congratulations on the birth of your son :) Last but not least Sue, I loved our chats in the evening, you have created such a wonderful place I hope you find the means and the will to keep it going. The communal meals in the evenings are also a great opportunity to connect and share stories with other travellers too. Yes, it’s located outside the village of Bukit Lawang meaning a 20–30-minute walk along what can be at times a tricky path meaning it won't suit all, particularly those with mobility issues. For me though it’s very charm was that it outside the town and set by the river in jungle. The sound of the river at night a soothing backdrop to fall asleep to. I could go on and on, but I will wrap up with my usual last question, would I go back to which I answer, yes within a heartbeat.
