This place has incredible atmosphere. It used to be an elementary school until they closed it a few years ago. It’s all still intact, the blackboards, the gym, etc. A few minutes walk from the main Magome street. The bunk beds were comfortable. The staff was pleasant and friendly. Looking back, I wish I stayed longer than one night.

The authentic Japanese-style room was beautiful. The host made us feel at home and was hospitable. Also he’d had amazing recommendations, ask for the gyoza restaurant and for the katsu restaurant if you’re there! We had a great stay and would recommend it to everybody who is planning a trip to Matsumoto, also for the experience to sleep on a futonbed, as 2 Europeans it was a first :-)

The owner and staff went above and beyond to ensure my stay was as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The evening meals were a highlight of my stay, each night presenting a delicious array of traditional Japanese dishes that were both a delight to the taste buds and a homage to the local cuisine. The dedication to authenticity and quality was evident in every bite, and it was an absolute pleasure to dine there each evening. The comfort of the beds deserves a special mention. I enjoyed restful nights of sleep, waking up refreshed and ready to explore the nearby attractions. Speaking of which, the location's proximity to the Sanosaka ski resort was perfect for me. This lesser-known gem provided ample opportunities for skiing without the crowds, enhancing the enjoyment of my winter sports experience. Additionally, the offer of transportation to other ski resorts in the area was a thoughtful touch that allowed for effortless exploration of the region's diverse slopes. The charm of the house, with its older architecture, added an element of enchantment to the stay. It felt like stepping into a cozy, historical haven that provided a unique contrast to the modernity of everyday life. This, combined with the exceptional hospitality and the serene location near the Sanosaka ski resort, made my stay an unforgettable experience.

This was fantastic. The room and all facilities were super clean and nice. And the dinosaur details were really cool. The owners are very kind and helpful. They also provide breakfast, drinks, ice cream and other things for cooking if you want to use the kitchen.

Good quality with a spacious common area and a well equipped kitchen. The host was friendly, welcoming, and clearly cared about his guesthouse to a high standard. We felt right at home and he cleared the snow from our car windows too which was very thoughtful.

What an absolute gem of a place! Machiya Guest House Carta is set in a beautifully preserved 19th century wooden house. You travel back in time as soon as you set a foot in. The zen garden, beautifully furnished common areas and large bedrooms fill you with peace. You can feel that much love and care has been invested into this place to make guests feel comfortable and welcome. The owners were such lovely people, and so very helpful. Each of their recommendations was spot on. The location is great too, in a quiet area of town but a short walking distance to a host of great cafes, restaurants and trendy shops. The guest house is also well connected to all the main sights (including train station) thanks to the loop bus, a short distance away. If you're lucky enough to find this place available, don't hesitate. Staying there was such a privilege. I couldn't think of a better place to sip in the tranquil and cultured atmosphere of this beautiful city.
