Nestled in an exclusive kloof, on the edge of a Boekenhout forest, in the village of Betty's Bay in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, this heritage cottage is one of few surviving thatch roof houses was originally built in Betty's Bay. Designed and built by architect, Tappies de Wet for his own family, soon after Harold Porter did the layout of the current botanical gardens and street plans of the town in the 1930's, this cottage is in ownership of only the third family since it was built. The current owners updated and extended the cottage to meet modern standards and needs. A new modern extension allows for comfortable living and entertaining. The original cottage houses a character full dining room that can accommodate 8 people. In the old cottage is also a double bedroom (queen size bed) and bathroom with shower. This bedroom has big windows on 3 sides to embrace the romantic forest setting. The original outbuilding is converted into a big bedroom with two three quarter beds and a bathroom with shower. This bedroom is reached from the deck next to the kitchen. The ground floor of the modern extension is a big open plan living room and kitchen. Fold away doors on two sides of this space allow for easy indoor/outdoor living. The upper floor of the modern extension boasts a big main bedroom (queen size bed) and bathroom with bath and shower. The mountain views from these rooms are exceptional. The extensive grounds are bordering the Harold Porter botanical gardens and there are picnic tables down in the Boekenhout forest. The beach is a short stroll along the Dawidskraal river.
Betty's Bay is within the Kogelberg Biosphere which is considered to be the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom-one of just 6 plant kingdoms of the world. It has the richest, most complex biodiversity on earth, home to more than 1880 plant species. Of these, 77 are found just here, and nowhere else. The seascape here are also significant: more than 3500 marine species occur only here. Betty's Bay is also home to a unique colony of African penguins.
