There is very little shade and all the streets are hard and uneven. Make sure you apply suncream, take your sunglasses and wear a hat/umbrella. Be prepared for a physical experience!
Be prepared for a physical experience! To see the extensive ruins is a lot of walking. Even if you are in good shape and can walk with full capacity, the walking is hard because the road and sidewalks are not flat and you stroll, stop/start, and turn a lot which is what makes exploring Pompeii so enjoyable--you are walking through an extensive city.Guest review byEdwardUnited States - 4.0

I could live next to the ruins just to be able to visit as often as possible. The preserved frescos, murals, and mosaics are so attractive. There are three supermarkets within 5 minutes walking. The flat was spotless and had everything we needed for cooking.
