An ancient crossroads of civilisations and cultures, Oman offers intrepid travellers the chance to engage with an Arab country that’s refreshingly humble. Its varied landscapes leave a treat for the eyes, with unspoiled stretches of coastline strewn with white-sand beaches. Mudbrick villages cling to the side of rocky valleys. Soaring mountain ranges are sliced with bottomless canyons, while the great Wahiba Sand Dunes seem to ripple endlessly into the desert. All this is spread across three huge regions. The northernmost is home to Muscat, Oman’s chaotic capital. Here you can find a myriad of old forts, grand mosques and royal palaces – some explorable on foot, others requiring a little more effort to reach. To escape the crowds, take a day trip to Nakhal Fort, a stone-carved citadel found at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. These towering peaks stretch all the way to the United Arab Emirates, hiding riverbed oases and jagged fjords. In the southern region, the palm-fringed beaches of Salalah make for an ideal retreat after the long, dusty journey down the coast. Accommodation options are aplenty here, with a range of hotel resorts and simple guesthouses to choose from in the bigger cities and coastal towns.

There are a number of available options for a stay in a desert in the area, but Fyafy camp is a top choice from our experience. First, the location, it is deep enough into the desert, which offers a very dark night sky perfect for star gazing. We had a fun drive to the camp with a 4x4 car escorted by our host. The camp is already in quite high dunes and right besides the very scenic ones, which offered fantastic scenery both to experience and feel the atmosphere and for the photographs.
If you look for a private camp (three tents), to fully immerse in the atmosphere it is a perfect choice as it felt like we had the whole desert for ourselves.
The camp is set up with a lot of attention to the details, offers comfort, and is very beautifully designed, fantastic for photography enthusiasts in how beautifully the tents blend into the environment. It was a really nice touch that we could sleep under the night sky as we preferred (there was a dedicated mattress provided for this in the tent).
As well, both the dune bashing and the Camel ride activities were available, we have tried both and was definitely worth it, it has really added to the experience.
Amer is a fantastic host, and made our stay very welcome from the assistance for the arrival, to stories on Omani culture. Very smooth communication. For the activities and in general didn't feel pushy, but rather open and making us feel at home. As well, if you are looking for parfum, Amer can recommend you a great shop, as we very much liked the smell of the one he was wearing.
If you are choosing a camp and may feel overwhelmed by the options, I can only recommend to look no further as everything to the details was top and with comfort and has made it a highlight of our trip.

Situated in Salalah, within 35 km of Wadi Ain Sahalnoot and 36 km of Sultan Qaboos Mosque, نزل كوفان التراثي Koofan Heritage Lodge features accommodation with a terrace and free WiFi as well as free...
Guest review
Very special accommodation awaited us here, namely the Koofan Heritage House. This is a 150-year-old clay and stone house that has been carefully restored by the owner family. In the individual rooms, you will find numerous original artefacts and pieces of furniture belonging to the family from earlier times, which are beautifully displayed here. The house has 12 individually furnished rooms, a small souvenir shop, a café, a tour desk and a small museum. But the whole house is actually a kind of "open-air museum".
While most visitors only come for the museum (admission 1 rial), we definitely recommend at least one overnight stay. A small, traditional breakfast is served in the morning. The staff are incredibly friendly and go out of their way to provide guests with an exceptional experience. The accommodation is just 25 minutes from Wadi Darbat and only 5 minutes from the sea. An absolute recommendation!
Greetings to the staff from Marco and Nicole from Germany!
