This is a really lovely renovated Samurai home that was built over 100 years ago. They’ve renovated it in a way that really preserves the original feel but the new additions are luxurious. It’s also located in an older Samurai village so the surrounding area is very cool as well. Super quiet, lovely wood bath tub, and a lot of character. This is a really unique place to stay and we loved it. We came to see the migrating cranes and it’s about 20 minute drive from there. We had dinner at a great spot nearby that our hosts recommended, they were very welcoming and kind.

Kagoshima in winter - Feb - can be very cold.

Kagoshima in winter - Feb - can be very cold. Food here is great and the Satsuma Japanese wonderful. Black is a lucky color in Kagoshima thus the my son's Rebnise basketball team wears black at home games. Taxis are always available at stations and it is not far from anywhere. A day trip to Ibuski's sand baths is recommended - on fine days. Plenty of public natural mineral water onsens are available. Shiroyama's has a fantastic view .The ferry ride and Rainbow Onsen on Sakurajima is great.

Beautiful Traditional Japanese Inn right next to the flowing Mauro Falls. The PRIVATE onsen overlooks the river. It is stunning. The staff were so welcoming and ensured you had the best possible stay. When we went to Kirishima Shrine we mentioned we liked walking trails and they suggested we walk Kirishima Gorge. It was sensational and the highlight of Kirishima as it was stunning. The staff will drop you off at the Bus stop anytime you like. It is walking distance into town for the markets. The evening traditional meal was incredible about 20 different items , KAISEKI It was actually a little sad to leave as the Staff made our stay there very special. It is the BEST and only place to stay in Kirishima. When I was deciding where to book a lot of reviews said their accomodation was tired and old. It was traditional, so clean and beautiful.

Amami-Oshima is a stunning island and so far (mostly) unheard off by foreign tourists and 'off the beaten track'. There are frequent daily ferries/ships to surrounding islands and on to Kagoshima. If you visit Amami a rental car is a MUST to easily explore the island as any public transport is basically just non-existent, totally infrequent or just very limited geographically. I would suggest no less than 3 full days to explore Amami but 5 would be perfect.

This trip was truly special. Thanks to the hotel's consideration, we were able to have a more perfect time. The view of the sea from the room was truly overwhelming, and the open view instantly relieved the fatigue of the day. The interior of the room was also clean and luxurious, making it very comfortable. In particular, the friendly service of the staff was the most memorable. They always welcomed us with a bright smile and sincere response. The whole process from check-in to check-out was sm

    The beaches are GORGEOUS.

The beaches are GORGEOUS. I made a full trip around the perimeter over the course of my stay, and each side of the island has a different feel. I would recommend visiting at least 2 different sides when you visit. Yurigahana and the beaches on the east side are pretty, but I personally liked the beaches on the north, such as Terasaki Beach. The locals are friendly and welcoming, and restaurant owners all were happy to chat. I made friends with the owner of 蒼い珊瑚礁, a soba noodle restaurant and gift shop, who took me to the historic burial grounds to make an offering to the old bones there. I had a drink of sake with the dead and helped collect some bones into a neat pile.

Yakushima is incredibly beautiful, and because of its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are many more accommodations for foreign travellers than other areas of Japan (even on the mainland). The bus routes are very straightforward—especially if you have a single- or multi-day bus pass, but it is much easier to bring or rent a car and simply drive around the island. I particularly enjoy visiting Shinto shrines, and there are a good handful of them on the island, but the main Yaku-jinja is really lovely and right next to the ocean south of Miyanoura port. If you have the chance, I also recommend taking a chopstick-making workshop, or visit the Yakusugi museum and do a hands-on demonstration there. The only major problem is that the main transport to and from the island is by ferry, and if the seas are too rough, the ferries don't operate and you may be stranded for extra time (1 day for me).

Standard APA accomodations, but we had a stinky smoking room which was tiny tiny tiny for two people and one tiny bed :/ I think APA does that: they book two people into a "double" then upsell you at the front desk to a bigger room. They did that to us in Ryugoku Tokyo property also...

People mostly go to Okinawa looking for amazing beaches, while Amami, that is closer, is still not well-known to non-Japanese people. It is reachable either by flight or by a night ferry from Kagoshima. In Amami you can experience a non-touristy holiday while enjoying nature and stunning beaches. Finding someone speaking English is not easy, as they’re are not so used to having western visitors. However, they’re so friendly that despite any language barriers they will try to engage a conversation with you and help you if needed. A must in your Japan trip!
