It's a spa town with a lot of history and a very energetic red-light district. Lots of money being invested in new tall buildings in the centre of the business district that don't quite jive with the otherwise laid-back (if you'll pardon the expression) atmosphere of the town. Morning walk along the waterway when there were not many tourists was peaceful and enjoyable. The are lots of small shops on the main street, but might be too crowded to enjoy. Not a great deal to do or see in Oita. The castle ruins holds some interest. A very friendly man in a temporary office in the car park helpfully explained more about the castle and it's moats. We visited in the off season, so not much was going on, although we knew that and it was all right. Onta Yaki Pottery Village was a terrific day trip, although we did have to take a long taxi ride to get there. I loved this town and could easily live here. I was lucky enough to catch Ukai (cormorant fishing on the Mikuma River while enjoying a dinner cruise). It has a laid-back vibe, with some excellent dining options close to the station. The 7 hells was the reason we went to Beppu and they were interesting but I'm not 100% sure it was worth travelling specifically for. Better to have it as a day trip from Fukuoka. If you do go, don't go to the 'Crocodile' one, I'm no expert in Crocodile health, but those poor things really did not look in very good condition. We went to Yufuin and Beppu, Yufuin by the touristy train (book a month earlier and reserve your seats!), then we took the bus from Yufuin to Beppu and did the onsen tours on our own by bus.
