Location is 10-15 minute walk from the Takayama station, which is convenient when you are doing day trips to the nearby attractions. I stayed with my 74 and 78 year old parents, and the walk was doable. The hotel has a free shuttle from the station which we used when we arrived and when we left due to the bags, other than that, we walked to the station. The city center however, is a bit of a walk (25-30 mins) which was not doable with my parents, so we had to pay for taxis, which are expensive in Takayama, so just keep that in mind. If i had been there with other ppl my age, i would have not mind the walk.. Food: Their restaurants were closed by 8:30, and so do most restaurants in Takayama, so make sure you (1) reserve wherever you want to go because most rests go off of reservations and (2) eat before 8pm or you will go to bed with an empty stomach. Breakast was pricy but if you are looking for something more than bread and coffee at the bus station before your tours, wake up early and might be worth the price. Facilities: Very well maintained, very clean, staff was very helpful. Onsen was AWSOME, super clean, multiple "jacuzzies", 2 indoor, 2 outdoors, SUPER relaxing. They are free of use between 3pm and 10pm and have everything you need such as hair treatments, hair dryers, etc. They have a sauna, multiple showers, and overall, it felt luxurious and comfortable. We had a massage which I believe was relatively cheap ($30 USD) for one hour and it was a very therapeutic one, although it is not on a closed room spa, which was okay for the price. Rooms: They are spacious, futon beds are comfortable, they are warm so you don't have to worry about heating it up when you return from your day trips. The staff will set up your futon bets at 7pm, unless you ask them to be earlier.

I’ll be recommending the town of Ito and Yokikan to anyone who visits Japan. It is the small and charming town you want to visit to experience true Japanese hospitality, omotenashi. This is a 5th generation, family-owned ryokan and it showed with such amazing service. Some highlights are when you arrive, the owner (who speaks excellent english, which is quite rare at ryokans) will offer you a map and many recommendations for restaurants, activities, and even local conbinis. We took those recommendations and this was easily our most memorable part of the trip. Then the lovely and nice staff will show you around to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the baths or amenities. I felt very charmed and safe with this staff, it just warms your heart. There are clear hours and instructions to ensure that both genders get to experience all 3 baths. Definitely take the time to try all three, they each have a different relaxing environment! Something that took me back was that the staff cleaned the wheels of my luggage and I had genuinely never seen that before. My partner is allergic to seafood and they were the only ryokan who could make an accommodation, which we’re thankful for and could eat a delicious breakfast in our room, at ease. On top of all that, the owner was generous and gave us a car ride back to the Ito eki when we checked out. The baths were clean and just the right soothing temperature, the ofuton gave us some of the best sleep we had on this trip, and the open-air bath at the top is as memorable as it gets. We truly relaxed for two whole nights and cherish our stay at Yokikan. We can’t wait to come back!

Absolutely stunning location. Beautiful historic building, spotlessly clean and comfortable with incredibly kind and friendly staff. The onsen baths were lovely and the peace and tranquility were very special. The meals were fantastic - two of our party don’t eat fish and the hotel went out of their way to provide delicious and varied alternatives. The staff who looked after meal service were so friendly and helpful, explaining how to eat the more complicated courses.

We had a very spacious room with a beautiful ocean view. We especially enjoyed the complimentary beverage service. The staff was very helpful. Food was very good, but did not offer much in variety if staying multiple days. It's a little out of the way, but there is shuttle service available to Toba Station if you wish to venture off and do some sightseeing. Just be sure to leave and return between the shuttle service hours.

The food was excellent with very impressive presentations. We had half-board and the latest breakfast serving was at 8:30, the latest dinner at 18:30. Not much happening in the evening, although the onsens were great. It felt like a spa-resort more than a bustling hotel, but we enjoyed it. We had a traditional room with futons and a lovely sea-view. It was simple but comfortable and clean.

We love this town and have visited it before. It’s charming but not twee; historic but not precious. There is so much to see and do in town, not to mention in the surrounding area. We never seem to have enough time to see and do everything that we planned. We will return!

Shizuoka is a hidden gem.

Shizuoka is a hidden gem. You can stay here and get to many sightseeing destinations by rail (day trips) and come back to the relaxation of more laidback location. Locals are very pleasant and friendly, not so jaded by the over tourism of Kyoto and Osaka. We speak very limited Japanese, but were welcomed and managed in small local restaurants and Izakayas.

Atami is just too full of tourists.

Atami is just too full of tourists. Crowded and no feeling of being in Japan. There is virtually nothing to see in the town except Atami castle. This is a rebuilt castle where each floor (1-5) is a type of exhibition. Only one floor with wooden replicas of many old famous castles is good to see. However, to get there you must buy a $9 cable car ticket and then another $10 entrance fee as well as a taxi fee to get to the cable car. Not worth it.

I travelled from Tokyo to Shin-Fuji via Kodama Shinkansen.

I travelled from Tokyo to Shin-Fuji via Kodama Shinkansen. The fare is ¥5900 one way and travel time is nearly an hour. I stayed at Toyoko Inn which is 150 meters from the Shin Fuji station. There are lots of car rentals in the area but I was not able to get one as they only accept advance booking from their website. It took me 2 hours getting to and from the foot of Mt. Fuji, by bus and a 15 minute walk in the village to reach my destinations. Roads are quite narrow but they are common in Japan. Like most countryside places in Japan, Fuji is relatively clean, rich in nature, and lots of places to explore. My advice if you want to visit Fuji: 1. Travel by Shinkansen going to and from Fuji. 2. Rent a car so you can visit most of the attractions in and around Mt. Fuji. 3. Spend at leat 3-4 days in the area. 4. Bring cash with you always as most establishments are cash based. 5. Download Papago app on your phone so you can translate Japanese images, signs, etc if you're having difficulty understanding the language. That's it and enjoy your trip to Mt. Fuji.

The outlets have always been raved about, but they're just high-end shopping outlets that you could find anywhere. It's not unique to Japan and was a bit of a waste of our time. Otherwise, Gotemba is the perfect area overlooking Fuji, and we love returning every year! Rembrandt Premium Hotel is by far the highlight for us with their meals and stay.

The room was basic but clean and comfortable with good shower, all that we needed for a good night sleep. There were free coffee and tea provided at the reception area as in other hotels. Only a 5 minutes walk from the hotel to the Terminal 1 departure hall was incredible, can't think of a better option than staying here. Breakfast starts at 6am which is earlier than the few hotels we have stayed during the trip.

Hamamatsu is a small industrial city located about halfway...

Hamamatsu is a small industrial city located about halfway between Kyoto and Tokyo. It has a number of industrial tourism sites - Suzuki Plaza, esp., and music-related sites - Yamaha Innovation Road and the Musical Instrument Museum. There are a number of Jazz- and Classical-music festivals in the fall, and that is a good time to visit. Lake Hamana is beautiful, and there are a number of interesting temples, shrines, and historical sites like the small but beautiful Hamamatsu Castle. Mostly ignored by Western tourists, but easy to get around, it's charm is in one's ability to visit Japan as it is for those who live there.

The 8km trail from Magome was great and there were buses going from the station to take you to the start of that short trail. On the return you could either walk to the train station a short walk from Tsumago or catch a bus back to Magome then another back to Nakatsugawa station. Lots of options and times. A beautiful and picturesque walk.
