Kijani is a charming little hotel in Shela, well located to discover the village on foot, and the nearby islands by boat. It has everything one needs for a perfect holiday; provides a quiet and peaceful backdrop. We loved the flexibility of management (even with last minute issues), return boat transfers included in the price, amazing breakfast and restaurant. Fantastic staff (management, reception, cleaning team, restaurant, kitchen, guards, in short: EVERYONE): kind, attentive, all while being respectful of privacy. We have stayed elsewhere in Lamu and Kijani truly stands out. Thank you.

This house is palatial - It is vast with loads of lovely chill-out spaces, every room is spacious, all the bedrooms have massive en-suites, and everything is spotless and incredibly comfortable. It is a new brand build but it has been done in a tasteful traditional Swahili style (but with all mod cons). The pool was great - it has a shallow end where you can sit and cool off and a deep section where you can dive. It was extremely hot in Shela in Jan so I would say a pool was essential for a comfortable holiday at that time of year. There is a vast roof terrace where we star gazed and chatted at night. The kids had movie nights on the smart TV which meant we could relax and chat elsewhere. We were two families (4 adults and 4 kids) and we didn't even use one of the bedrooms as the place is so big. The staff were very helpful and kept the place tidy and clean at all times. We hired a chef during the visit at a very reasonable rate - we ate breakfast and dinner at home and ate out during the day - he cooked everything we requested very well and the meals were all delicious. He also did all our food shopping which was very helpful. I liked staying in the dunes behind Shela (you get to see a bit of real Shela life on the way) but it is worth knowing that the house is not right on the seafront. It takes about 10 mins to walk to the sea/cafes. However, the location is reflected in the price - it was extremely good value indeed considering it was such an amazing house.

very amazing surroundings feels fresh, safe and serene room was upgraded to a glass lodge with a nice view and flowers planted so you get a nice view of the Mara in the distance but also fresh flowers right next to the window food was amazing, kitchen team and Chef Patrick offered us a private dinner for our group of 4; excellent food, wonderful experience. The other Masai staff performed on both nights for bout our group and others they also have a bonfire burning every night so you can get lovely time by the fire an opportunity to enjoy the starry night and also meet other guests Staff walk with you if it’s late around the camp so you always feel safe

An experience that everyone should have at least once in a lifetime. It has an amazing vibe to it and the people are extremely welcoming and friendly. It is culturally rich and has a lot of history to it. The islands are small enough to get by on foot and finding boat rides across are easy. Lamu truly teaches you to be present in the moment and take life a little slower.

Went to celebrate my birthday and it was my first time in Lamu. A simple request to shiban house to make it feel special, ended up being the best birthday surprise ever...Sada thank you, my heart is overwhelmed by how you managed to surprise me 😊. Joseph took excellent care of us and was ready to help us around. I must say, I feel fulfilled even as I have turned a year younger 😂😊😂. Thank you mapenzi too for the awesome breakfast we got every day. Shela is the best place to be in lamu. You can access lamu town easily and learn so much about the history of it, ask for the best knowledgeable guy there called 'sunshine' locally. Its near peponi hostel and majlis resort. Make a point of doing the sunset cruise 😊 . Definately 10/10.

Lamu is the real Swahili Coast. The atmosphère is authentic. With everyone on foot because there are no cars the sense of community is very strong. Architectural style of the village has been well maintained. There are good local eateries, and the peponi restaurant in Shella village is outstanding. We went everywhere by water taxi. Charming!

I liked that Lamu is a small town, easy to walk about and no pollution say for donkey dung. There are many eateries with all kinds of meals, loved the seafood restaurants near the jetty. Lamu is safe for travellers and the community is very welcoming. Easy to get around either by speed boat, dhow or slow engine boats if not in a rush. The weather is warm and windy especially in the evening. People prefer to walk about and sit around the seafront at night where there is good ocean breeze before retiring for bed. Fishing is a great recreation activity which we all enjoyed while in Lamu.
