Just 250 metres from Zenko-ji Temple, Matsuya Ryokan offers simple Japanese rooms with tatami-mat floors, a green-tea maker and an attached Western bathroom. The hotel features public baths. An absolutely wonderful place to stay to experience a traditional Japanese Ryokan. The breakfasts were varied each day and beautifully presented. The fact that the Ryokan is located at the start of the Zenkoji temple complex made it even better. It was only 3km from the train station so okay walking without bags. The advantage is because of its position you could walk just a few meters to pick up a taxi to the station which only cost 1200Y.

Shiroganeya is a traditional Japanese minshuku. Our host Maki-san was truly exceptional. She made sure our family of 6 were well-fed, well-rested, and well-prepared for our little hike to the main Togakushi shrine, which is a 7-min drive away. The dinner prepared for us was superb as well - at least 7-courses! I liked that the house itself has a lot of history. Dinner is served with precious chinaware that are more than a century-old, but still in very good shape and colour. There is adequate heating throughout the house, especially important for a cold winter stay. Maki-san also had a stash of toy cars and trains that kept our boy occupied. There’s just so much to rave about this place. Hopefully we’ll be back for a second visit!

Our one night at Takimi House was the highlight of our two-week trip to Japan. The hosts, a lovely couple, made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. Their warmth and hospitality were truly exceptional. The food was another standout aspect of our stay. Every meal was delicious, but the miso soup was particularly incredible. It was the best we’ve ever had! Additionally, the hosts picked us up and dropped us back off at the train station in Nagiso which was incredibly helpful given the remote location of Takimi House. This extra touch made our stay even more convenient and enjoyable. Overall, Takimi House provided an unforgettable experience, and we highly recommend it to anyone visiting Japan.

This was such a fantastic place to stay! If you are doing the Nakasendo trail I could not recommend this more. Stunning rooms (lovely by the river), delicious breakfast and lovely onsen. Everyone working there was amazing and kind! I even left my jacket behind at one of the restaurants and they couriered it for me to my next hotel. A real Japanese experience.

Private onsen baths are really nice. The location is bit far from train station and buses are not frequent. They provided shuttle transportation to and from train station free of cost. And Delicious Japanese dinner and breakfast.

If you're looking for an authentic Japanese roakan onset experience, this is your place. We loved the onsen and bath products, the traditional Japanese meals, and the staff were incredible!

My husband and I loved our stay here. Only a 2 minute walk to the lift and 10 minute walk to the center of the village with lots of restaurants. We were provided with the traditional futon beds which was an interesting and not an all together uncomfortable experience. The room had a toilet and sink, but the showers were public by gender on a different floor (didn’t love that but we’re American and not used to it). The free breakfast is exceptional and the staff is oh so kind and helpful. We would stay here again.
