I was born in Portland and the purpose of the visit was to see family so I am very familiar with the island but there are some beautiful places of interest in and around the island. Even if you do not wish to drive there is a very good public service and also trains

Portland was easy to get to on the bus (No 1) from the train station. There is a stop just over the road but not clearly marked, you can pick up the bus from the Kings Head Statue as well ( walk down to the seafront , turn right and it’s the last bus stop).
Portland was interesting with different scenery for our walk, which included Portland Bill and old quarries. Our visit was Monday / Tuesday evening and we had no car. I would suggest booking a restaurant/ pub if you want to eat on Portland. The Cove House Inn ( closed Monday ) and the Little Ship ( closed Tuesday) are good options. We took the bus to Weymouth Harbour ( get off at the Magistrates Court stop), there are lots of eating places and nice for a walk round.

unusual place with a mixture of terrain .
unusual place with a mixture of terrain . The beach is quite something on a sunny day and well worth a visit along with the Portland Bill lighthouse where we were lucky enough to see a Seal . I would certainly recommend a visit which also has the benefit of Weymouth a 10-15 minute drive away. Local People we spoke to seemed genuinely funny and helpful.

Even though it has quite limited options of where to eat in the island, for climbers it is a lovely place to go. A lot of the beaches I know from there are pebbled one so bring suitable footwear so your feet do not hurt. This is the second time (always in Sep) I come to this part of Dorset, I discover something knew evert time.

We visited Portland to go on a Sailing trip on Moonfleet.
We visited Portland to go on a Sailing trip on Moonfleet. Great experience and a fun day.
Restaurants were limited in the area. Salt is near the harbour but card only and expensive. The Cove Inn is beautiful, gorgeous setting to watch the sunset.
A trip to Portland Bill is a must whilst visiting, stunning views.
There are places of interest in Castletown with the D-Day museum and Castle just around the corner.

Scenic with lovely coastal views.
Scenic with lovely coastal views. If you like cliffs and walking or visiting lighthouses, it's great. We didn't get on to Chesil beach - couldnt quite work it out.
The cafe we found was really expensive!!
It didn’t feel like a hotel, more like visiting your lovely grandmother having your own separate suite in her house. It was quiet, room was spacious and the garden view was just exceptional. Bathroom was clean and it had a tub where you could sit in it for a nice relaxing bath. Margaret also made an exceptional English breakfast - best I’ve ever ate at least - each morning, and the atmosphere was in a dining hall, either peaceful to classic songs or friendly and talkative with other guests staying in the house.
We loved the whole place. The location is stunning. The views are amazing. If you enjoy walking you have the SW Coast Path on your doorstep. If you want to leave the car at the property and don't fancy a walk, the Portland Coaster stops nearby to take you into Weymouth. The cottage has absolutely all you need to feel at home and a hot tub waiting at the end of the day was really appreciated! Cannot recommend highly enough.
Location is brilliant! Just a short bus ride into Weymouth and so close to lots of brilliant places to go for days out. Views from the top of the hill where the Heights hotel is are stunning!
Lots of space in the house for a family of 6 and 2 dogs. Games and jigsaws a great addition for any rainy afternoons!
I'm staying here while working in Portland and this was the only place I could afford. The room on arrival was clean warm and comfortable if very dated. The parking is great (I have nightmares of driving nearly 300 miles and not being able to park when I don't know the area). The wifi is very good.
We had a great time at Sally Hall. Spacious, comfortable and well equipped. Portland was really interesting. The highlights were Chesil beach and seeing the signets at Abbotsbury Swannery and the weather which was amazing. Check in was easy and communication was helpful and prompt.
Mark & Jo was very polite and made me feel very welcome. The hotel was lovely. Breakfast was nice. Would love to stay on my future visits. Best property I have ever stayed in Weymouth/Portland in all the 15 years that I have been going.
The property was well-prepared and everything was clean when we arrived. The view for us was the plus point as you will be staying near the water with the view of the harbor and it is very peaceful especially in the morning.
Portland is one of my favourite spots to visit, I go there at least once a year. The Heights Hotel is a great location to explore it. The staff are great, hotel is really nice. Food is high quality.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Plenty parking spaces easy to find. Cooked breakfast was nice. We had both meals at the bistro which were excellent and made that part feel more like a 4-5 hotel.
It was a one night stay for my family in The Aqua Hotel that we find very nice and clean, very clean 👌,the staff nice and helpful given up tips where to eat and visit on our stay in Portland.
The location was superb, loved the view over the sea and Portland Bill! Great access to walks and a nearby restaurant. The pub had a good selection of beers available.
We loved this cottage and the hot tub! It is in a great location, near the coastal paths and Portland Bill. The cottage was very well-equipped and comfortable.
